Siamo nel 1933 quando Franklin Delano Roosvelt con il “New Deal” mise fine all’era del “Proibizionismo” che durava dal 1919.

In quegli anni i locali dove poter bere alcolici erano ridotti ad essere collocati negli scantinati e nei retrobottega di molte attività, gestiti dalla mafia italo-americana che produceva bevande alcoliche e faceva entrare l’alcool illegalmente nel paese.

In questi luoghi chiamati “speakeasy”, il cui accesso era solo tramite una parola d’ordine, si ritrovava la classe medio-alta della società, tra cui poliziotti e politici corrotti.
